Lindell produced some top-class performance in the midst of a mixed day at The Belfry

Oliver Lindell put in the ‘solid performance’ we’ve come to expect from him this season, which once again sees him sitting near the top of the leaderboard after the opening day. Lindell managed to play 14 holes at the British Masters, finishing at -3. The Finn, who is two strokes behind the leader, shares fourth place.

“We played the first four holes in rough conditions, but after the interruption, the early evening brought good scoring conditions. It’s a shame that a thunderstorm interrupted the evening’s play again, and we’ll have to play the final holes early tomorrow morning. It’s been solid golf again, and my short game and putting are in good form. I hit four drives with my new clubhead; the first two were poor and cost me dearly, but the next ones were good,” Lindell recounted.

The day was punctuated by several interruptions due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, and not a single player managed to complete their round on Thursday. Lindell was among those for whom the day proved to be particularly long and challenging, as he had to maintain his focus throughout the lengthy interruption. The wait didn’t seem to affect his performance much, and Lindell will start Friday morning with a birdie putt of around three metres.

“It is a bit of a pain when you don’t live right next to the course, and it’s mostly just hanging about in the Players Lounge. The first delay came before the start, and we were able to visit our hotel then, but during the day I couldn’t be bothered to go all the way out there again. The second round might not start until Saturday, and they’re forecasting more bad weather for then, so we’ll have to see how it goes.”

Lindell’s scorecard did not feature a single score over par, and he racked up three birdies, the first of which was a superb chip from the edge of the green that found its way into the cup and got his scoring going.

The competition is scheduled to continue on Friday at 9.30 Finnish time.
