Lindell gave his all in the final round in Italy and took the sixth place
Oliver Lindell set his sights on a top-10 finish at the Open d’Italia and performed brilliantly on Sunday. He carded his best round of the tournament with a score of 65. His total score of -15 saw him move into a tie for sixth place, whilst his position in the Race to Dubai rankings also rose to ninth. This bodes well for his bid for a place at The Open, which is up for grabs for the top five players in the rankings who have not already secured a spot.
“A really good week back after the break. For a change, my putter was on fire today. It was pretty much a maximum performance. Surprisingly, I was way off the fairway to the left from the tee today. On the 11th hole, I missed a one-metre putt where the line was really unclear,” said Lindell of his final round.
His performance on the front nine, in particular, was close to the best possible score achievable. The Finn carded no fewer than five birdies and made numerous good par saves. On the back nine, in addition to the 11th hole, he carded another bogey following a tee shot that veered off to the left. However, the birdie on the final hole was a crucial success and secured vital ranking points.
Although the situation looks promising in terms of securing a place in the Open, as reflected in the rankings, the Porvoo native is heading straight from Italy to the Open’s final qualifying round.
“The final qualifying is due to take place on Tuesday at Dundonald Links in Scotland. I didn’t get the same course as last year, when I secured my place, so this will be a new course for me.”
Eugenio Chacarra managed to repeat the feat that Jayden Schaper and Casey Jarvis had achieved earlier in the season, winning his second consecutive competition with a score of -24. His winning margin eventually stretched to five strokes.
